  • Let love be without hypocrisy.

  • Hate what is evil.

  • Cleave to what is good.

  • Be devoted to one another with brotherly love.

  • Prefer one another in honor.

  • Do not be lazy in diligence.

  • Be fervent in spirit.

  • Serve the Lord.

  • Rejoice in hope.

  • Be patient in suffering.

  • Persevere in prayer.

  • Contribute to the needs of the saints.

  • Practice hospitality.

  • Bless those who persecute you.

  • Bless, and do not curse.

  • Rejoice with those who rejoice.

  • Weep with those who weep.

  • Be of the same mind toward one another.

  • Do not be haughty.

  • Associate with the lowly.

It is tempting to think only about ourselves. But the Bible reminds us that a Christian continually has others’ interests in mind. As followers of Jesus Christ, our response to others should be filled with concern and compassion—a stark contrast to the world’s selfish patterns. Here are some of the rules of the Christian life (see Romans 12, 13, and 14).

  • Do not pretend to be wiser than you are.

  • Repay no one evil for evil.

  • Commend what is honest in the sight of all men.

  • If it is possible, as much as it depends on you, live peaceably with all men.

  • Do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to God’s wrath, for it is written: “Vengeance is Mine. I will repay,” says the Lord.

  • If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If your enemy is thirsty, give him a drink, for in doing so you will heap coals of fire on his head.

  • Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

  • Let every person be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist are appointed by God.

  • Pay taxes.

  • Render to all what is due them: taxes to whom taxes are due, respect to whom respect is due, fear to whom fear is due, and honor to whom honor is due.

  • Owe no one anything, except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.

  • Take off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Behave properly, as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in immorality and wickedness, not in strife and envy.

  • Put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts.

  • Do not judge your brother critically.

  • Welcome him who is weak in faith, but not for the purpose of arguing over opinions.

  • Do not let him who eats despise him who does not eat, and do not let him who does not eat judge him who eats, for God has welcomed him.

  • Do not make your brother stumble.

  • Determine not to put a stumbling block or an obstacle in a brother’s way.

  • Welcome one another just as Christ also welcomed us, for the glory of God. Please others, not yourself.

  • Remember, each of us shall give an account of himself to God.
